What does this visa let you do?

This visa allows you and dependents included in your visa application to live as permanent residents in Australia.

As a permanent resident of Australia, you can:

  • Live and work in Australia on a permanent basis
  • Study in Australia at school, Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector or university
  • Receive subsidized healthcare through Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)
  • Access certain social security payments (subject to waiting periods)
  • Be eligible for Australian citizenship (subject to the residency eligibility criteria)
  • Sponsor people for permanent residence

Eligibility

Applications are by strictly by invitation. To be invited to apply, you must-

  • Submit an expression of interest
  • Meet the English language requirement.
  • Be less than 50 years of age when the invitation is issued
  • Have an occupation that is on the skilled occupation list*
  • Be a certified professional
  • Able to score 60 points in the test conducted by Skill Select
  • Meet health and character requirements

Expression of interest is submitted through Skill Select. This can be done from anywhere. If you are invited to apply for this visa you need to lodge an application within 60 days. Skill select has been designed to resolve the current skill shortages of Australia. You have to score 65 points in the following categories to get the visa

Applicant in Australia or outside Australia:

Base Application Charge: $3520

Additional Applicant Charge (18 and over): A$1760

Additional Applicant Charge (Under 18): A$880

For applicants who have turned 18 at the time of application and who are assessed as not having functional English the second

installment is $4885. For any other applicant, the second installment is nil.

Education is compulsory throughout Australia. Literacy rate is 99%. Australia has 37 government funded universities and two private universities.

Health in Australia is given high importance. Australia stands forth in highest life expectancy in the world – 79.5 years for males and 84 years for females. Total expenditure on health is 90% of GDP. It is nominally funded by income tax surcharge, known as Medicare levy.

The major concern of Australia is scarcity of skilled persons. What Australia looks for is skilled and talented professionals, and has amended its migration policy to fulfill the skill shortage in the country.

Overview

This is a permanent residence visa. As a permanent resident you are permitted to remain in Australia indefinitely. This visa also allows you to travel and enter Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted. The expiry of this visa does not affect your permanent resident status if you are in Australia. However, if you want to continue to travel to and from Australia as a permanent resident after the initial visa has expired, you must obtain a Resident Return Visa (RRV). Your eligibility for an RRV will depend on the period that you have resided in Australia.

Points Test

This visa has a points test designed to select visa applicants who have the skills and attributes that will help them find suitable employment in an occupation that matches their skills and is required in Australia.

Dependents

The following can be considered as dependents:

  • Partner
  • A dependent child of you or your partner
  • A dependent relative of you or your partner.

Secondary applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Location
  • English Language Ability  (IELTS, TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic tests are accepted)
  • Health
  • Character
  • Australian Values Statement

Note: TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic tests would be accepted from applicants from November 2014
